Restaurant donates produce to Valor Clinic

In light of the statewide shutdowns of restaurants, Boulder View Tavern found themselves in what should’ve been an unfortunate position: business was closed until further notice and a large order of produce had just been delivered.

With no in-house customers to serve, most of it would go bad and become waste.

That’s when Boulder View Tavern general manager Keith DeVos had an idea to turn a negative into a positive: give the food away to a charitable cause.

On Tuesday, staff of the Boulder View Tavern donated a large amount of their own brand-new produce to The Valor Clinic Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists veterans in getting access to housing, health care, and food assistance.

“We had just placed some big orders and we had gotten the orders delivered on Friday morning,” DeVos said. “We closed to the public last Friiday, so I talked to our owner and said listen, this stuff is gonna go bad. Do you mind if I find an in-need charity we can take it to and help out? And he said absolutely.”

The donations consisted of a wide variety of fresh vegetables, fruit, and more.

During a time of uncertainty for so many, the team at Boulder View Tavern wanted to pay it forward and not allow perfectly good food go to waste. They hope to inspire others to do the same.

DeVos added, “We did it because we felt like it was the right thing to do and not to waste food. Just because we are closed doesn’t mean we are gonna sit here and feel sorry for ourselves. We are going to try to reach out and help other people in the community who can use it.”

Boulder View Tavern is continuing to consider other ways to help the public under the given circumstances while they remain closed.

The decision to give to the Valor Clinic Foundation was propelled by the ongoing support Boulder View Tavern has for veterans in need of assistance.

“We are fortunate enough to be in a situation to give back. In a kind of bad time for everybody it’s nice to do something positive and give back to people who gave to our county and served our country.

“It was a good day even in a bad time, and we are very fortunate that our ownership allows us to do that,” DeVos said.
