Wanted man nabbed on I-78 with woman with stab wounds

A Connecticut man, wanted for attempted homicide, was nabbed along Interstate 78 in Hamburg, Berks County, on Saturday.

State police at Hamburg, assisted by troopers from Schuylkill Haven, Belfast and Fogelsville, took Henry Benitez-Navarro, 31, of East Hartford, into custody about 11:53 a.m.

The incident began when troopers at the Belfast barracks were contacted by East Hartford police regarding a possible homicide suspect traveling westbound on I-78. East Hartford police were tracking Benitez-Navarro’s cellphone. Fogelsville and Hamburg barracks were also contacted.

About 11:48 a.m. troopers spotted the suspect vehicle going westbound. The vehicle got off the interstate at Hamburg then attempted to re-enter I-78 at Hamburg. A vehicle stop was conducted by troopers who identified Benitez-Navarro as the driver. A woman with multiple stab wounds was in the front seat.

The investigation revealed that Benitez-Navarro had stabbed the woman and kidnapped her from East Hartford. A EMS unit was dispatched to the scene and she was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her wounds. She is listed in stable condition, troopers said.

Benitez-Navarro has been charged by East Hartford police with attempted homicide and kidnapping. He was taken into custody and charged by Hamburg troopers with being a fugitive from justice. He was arraigned before a district judge and committed to the Berks County prison in Reading, where he is awaiting extradition back to Connecticut.
