March 12, 2011 — Tamaqua’s Garth Lakitsky captures a state gold medal by edging Ryan Solomon of Milton, 2-1, in their Class 2A 215-pound championship matchup. After a scoreless first period, Lakitsky uses an escape in the second to take a lead. Solomon evens the score when he escapes in the third period, but his strategy of slowing up the match eventually hurts him against the usually-aggressive Lakitsky. A second stalling call on Solomon with 32 seconds left gives the Blue Raider wrestler the point he needs for a title. Lakitsky, the first Tamaqua grappler ever to win a state gold medal, finishes the season 42-0.
