March 7, 1940 — Joseph O’Donnell scores a game-high 15 points to lead Mauch Chunk Catholic to a 40-32 victory over Ashland in the Anthracite Parochial League tournament. The win evens the best-of-three series at a game apiece. Francis O’Donnell contributes nine points, while William McGinley chips in with six. The winners, coached by John McGinley, also receive five from William McElmoyle. Mauch Chunk will go on to claim the title when Ashland forfeits after the league won’t reschedule the deciding third game. Ashland asked for a new date because its two best players were sick.
