Lenten services

Effort UMC will have its Lenten study at 5:45 p.m. today for those already signed up.

Soup and salad will be served from 5:30 to 5:45 p.m. in Wesley Hall.

The Lenten service begins at 7 p.m.

Joint Lent service

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is the host church tonight for the five-church joint Lenten services. The Rev. Deb Scheffey, from Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will preach.

There will be a simple soup supper before the service, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. The worship service begins at 7 p.m.

Next week, the host church is Jerusalem UCC, Trachsville, with the Rev. John Haring, presenting the message.

Legion meetings

The West End Home Association, for the American Legion Post 927, is scheduled to meet at 7:30 tonight at the Post home in Gilbert. The meeting will take place in the main hall.

PV Band parents

The Pleasant Valley Band Parents group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school in Brodheadsville.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers to serve on the Board for the Hillside Cemetery Association are needed. This board consists of laity from both St. John Lutheran’s Church in Effort and Effort UMC and oversee the operations of the Hillside Memorial Cemetery located on Merwinsburg Road, across from the churches. Folks are asked to consider volunteering for one of the available openings.

Chestnuthill Seniors

Healthy Steps in Motion is this Friday’s activity at the Chestnuthill Seniors meeting, beginning at 10 a.m. after the coffee and tea meet and greet time that begins at 9 a.m.

The regular lunch is slated to be fish Thermidor, brown rice, spinach, sliced carrots and sliced peaches.

The light lunch on the menu is spinach salad, potato salad, mango, yogurt and juice.

Next Wednesday the activity is Nutrition with Strouds Garden at 10:30 a.m. as well as blood pressure screening at 11 a.m.

The regular lunch is slated to be chicken cacciatore, orzo Italiano, Italian green beans and diced pears.

The light lunch is Italian antipasto, carrot sticks, banana, yogurt and juice.

Participants are reminded to call 570-424-3735 or 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before to designate their respective lunch choices.

There is a suggested donation for each meal.

Eucharistic Adoration

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is holding a 24-hour Eucharistic Adoration beginning Friday at 8 a.m. and continuing until 8 a.m. Mass on Saturday.

Family Fun Night

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School PTO is having its Family Fun Night on Friday.

TOPS display

Kinsley’s ShopRite in Brodheadsville will be the site for a TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) display from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone looking to lose weight and wanting to use scientifically proven methods and having the support of a group of like-minded people is urged to learn more about TOPS at that time.

Art opening

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is holding the art opening of Nancy Tully and Tim Weaver’s Art of Chincoteague on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The exhibit runs Feb. 29 through March 31.

Explore the island of Chincoteague through the works of the two artists. This mixed media show depicts the beauty of the island.

Fellowship breakfasts

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, is offering Sunday breakfast from after the 8 a.m. Mass on Sunday until 11 a.m.

The breakfast, held in McCawley Hall, includes scrambled eggs and bacon. A free will offering will be accepted.

Effort UMC’s fellowship breakfast will also be held this Sunday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and a free will offering will also be accepted.

Riders meeting

The American Legion Riders, based at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert, are scheduled to meet 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Zion Lutheran’s group of needle pliers, the Knit & Crochet group, will meet again at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Operation: TOH

The next meeting of Operation: Touch of Home is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

Glasses anyone

Many folks know that Lions around the world are involved in helping those with vision problems. On the local level the Western Pocono Lions Club has several specially marked Lions eyeglasses collection boxes in area businesses into which folks can put their used eyeglasses when a new prescription is required or there is no longer a need for glasses.

These places include: St. Luke’s Physical Therapy, Kresgeville; First Northern Bank, Gilbert; Brodheadsville Eye Center, Brodheadsville; ESSA, Brodheadsville; and First Northern Bank, Sciota.

A club member empties the boxes periodically and then the glasses are passed on to be measured and sent on for further service to people in need around the world.

Auxiliary meets

The Legion Auxiliary of Post 927 will meet next Wednesday, with the Executive Committee meeting at 6 p.m. and the main meeting following at 7 p.m.

Fire calls

West End Volunteer Fire Company Chief Don Zipp reports that volunteers were called out for 39 incidents in February. Adding January’s calls makes a total of 86 incidents per year so far.

That is more than one a day on average.

MC Garden Club

The Monroe County Garden Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. March 11 at the Kettle Creek Environmental Center, 8050 Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg.

The guest speaker will be Ellen at Pocono Farmstand, who will present Garden Potpourri. Attendees are invited to bring their own questions they have always wanted answered.

The horticulture theme is: Leprechaun’s Choice. It is the horticulturist’s choice of exhibit.

The design theme is: Mardi Gras Masquerading March. People are invited to get into the spirit of Mardi Gras and have a party.

This table design theme is a party for one displayed on a tray or place mat. A floral arrangement is always included in a table design. Some fresh material is required, and dried materials may be incorporated into the design. Dried materials may be embellished with paint, glitter, etc. Accessories are permitted. Have a celebration New Orleans style.

A light luncheon will be served, for a small cost for nonmembers. Everyone interested in gardening is invited to attend.

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Fish fry Friday

The Knights of Columbus at our Lady Queen of Peace Church are having fish fry dinners on two upcoming dates, March 13 and March 20.

For the cost of dinner one can get soup, salad, fish & chips as well as baked fresh cod for an extra charge. Refreshments, desserts and pizza for children are also included.

Benefit quilt

Support Services for Seniors quilt raffle to benefit Monroe County Seniors will come to a conclusion at the Chestnuthill Center at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville on May 15.

The quilt made by the Sew N’ Craft Group, which meets at the Mountain Center in Tobyhanna, has created and donated the quilt for the drawing.

Fly fishing

Chestnuthill and Jackson Township residents are reminded that they can sign up for a half day of fly fishing on the McMichaels Creek in cooperation with the Pohoqualine Fish Association, Pocono Heritage Land Trust and both of the townships.

Applicants must provide proof of residency, photo ID and a valid Pennsylvania fishing license with applicable stamps.
