PV’s Womack reaches semis

BETHLEHEM — Alex Womack recalled how rejoining the Pleasant Valley wrestling program after a two-year hiatus wasn’t easy.

He wrestled from fourth through eighth grade, and then didn’t join the high school program.

Getting to districts for two consecutive years has deleted any doubts for the senior.

“It was a little intimidating at first, but I thought I did pretty good,” said the 160-pound senior, who was a win away from regionals at districts last year. “That was a long layoff in a hard sport.

“But I think I’m ready to go forward. This is my time now. I think I can go as far as I want to go. I think it is all in my head.”

Womack certainly supported his convictions.

The third-seed Womack (25-2) advanced to the semifinal round Saturday of the District 11 Class 3A championships after an impressive showing Friday afternoon in the opening rounds at Liberty High School.

He will be the lone Pleasant Valley wrestler moving into the championship round, with three of them in consolations. The Bears sat tied for 18th with 25 points among the 21-team field.

After an opening-round bye, Womack quickly flipped Parkland’s Jacob Ortman in 1:52 and then recorded a 7-3 decision over Bangor’s Jared Reto.

Womack will meet second-seeded Traisach Roland of Northampton in the semis this afternoon.

A step into the finals can accentuate an already heightened season.

“I think I am doing a little better than I thought I would do,” said Womack. “I have had some high and lows for me during the season, but lately it has been going good for me.”

It also was a strong start for 12th-seeded 120-pound junior Logan Segeda (11-15), who stopped fifth-seed Connor Demecher of Pottsville, 6-2, in his opening bout.

Segeda’s second time in the district round proved to be a relief from his initial feelings.

“I did better than I thought because I was really nervous coming into today,” said Segeda, who didn’t place in districts last year. “He took me down first, and let me up. I then started scoring points and gained control of the match.

“It has been a pretty average season for me. But I feel like I have gotten better as the season has gone on.”

However, Segeda suffered a fall in his next bout and will be in the consolation round along with fellow junior 195-pounder Chris Frable and sophomore 152-pounder James Syracuse.

Syracuse (21-6) bounced back after a 5-0 loss to Northampton’s Colby Judd to defeat Emmaus’s Jack Brion by an identical score. He suffered his previous five defeats in the 160-pound bracket.

“I was excited to battle back and show what I can do,” said Syracuse. “The season has been good for me, and I cut down to 152. To me, it doesn’t matter if I wrestle someone I haven’t seen because my nerves go away a couple seconds into the match.”
