Jim Thorpe council fills several positions

Jim Thorpe Borough filled several positions Thursday night that had been outstanding since the municipality’s reorganization meeting last month.

By a unanimous vote, council named Bureau Veritas its zoning, building code and plumbing inspection firm, after they were among three firms interviewed for the positions.

“I thought all the firms presented well, but I’m of the opinion that I’d like to see the borough make a change in these areas,” council President Greg Strubinger said at a Feb. 6 workshop. “I thought they were all comparable in price, but Bureau Veritas offered some online capabilities that I think would be to our residents’ advantage. They also have a very wide breadth of well-qualified staff who would be able to meet our needs.”

Veritas will replace Barry Isett and Associates in that capacity, who had worked for the borough since 2012.

The appointment came after resident Andrew Roberts advocated for an individual, not a firm, to get the job.

“I think having an individual as a zoning officer and getting them trained to be a building code official would work better for Jim Thorpe,” Roberts said. “We still have commercial and residential inspection firms to do that. We’ve all seen what has happened with having a firm to do zoning and building codes and it hasn’t worked out well.”

Strubinger said while he didn’t disagree, the borough did not receive any applications from individuals. Roberts suggested advertising the position publicly with a job description and holding off on making the appointment.

Barry Isett will keep its role as the borough’s stormwater management firm and will continue to oversee a master site plan underway for Thorpe’s Memorial Park.

In other appointments Thursday, Thorpe appointed Joanne Klitsch and Bob Schaninger to four-year terms on the planning commission, Tony Lyle Augustine as property maintenance code official and nuisance official, and Schaninger as the police pension council representative.

The municipality still has an opening on its Uniform Construction Code Joint Board of Appeals.

Council also approved planning commissions to be held on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
