Penn Forest fills board, roadmaster vacancies

The Penn Forest Township supervisors have appointed a new roadmaster and filled a vacancy on their board.

The board appointed Roger Meckes to fill a seat left open when Warren Reiner resigned Monday night.

They also appointed Meckes to serve as the new roadmaster.

The board chose Meckes during a special meeting Friday afternoon.

He served as a supervisor for 3.5 years but in November lost his bid for re-election. He previously served as assistant supervisor.

Only one person, Patrick Holland, submitted a letter of interest for the position.

The supervisors said that Meckes’ experience as a supervisor and assistant roadmaster made him the best fit for both positions.

“He served three and a half years, he was assistant roadmaster and vice chairman,” supervisor Scott Lignore said.

His salary has not been finalized. It will be set by the township’s board of auditors, which will meet later this month. During a reorganization meeting Monday night, the supervisors voted to recommend that the roadmaster be paid an annual salary of $7,700, plus mileage.

Meckes will fill a seat vacated by Warren Reiner. Reiner resigned during the reorganization meeting. Reiner was also the roadmaster, having held that position for five years.

Reiner submitted his resignation to the board after supervisors Christian Bartulovich, Tom Cross, and Judith Knappenberger voted to replace him as president and roadmaster.

The roadmaster position was left vacant following the reorganization.

During Monday’s special meeting, Cross and Knappenberger supported appointing Bartulovich to the roadmaster position, but he did not receive enough votes. Bartulovich had to abstain and Lignore voted against.

Meckes’ term as supervisor will run through 2021, when the next municipal election occurs. The roadmaster is reappointed each year.

Also during Friday’s special meeting, the supervisors appointed Christine Fazio as an auditor, and Lignore as assistant roadmaster. The supervisors recommended Monday night that the auditors set pay for that position at $15 per hour if he is needed for work on the road crew, plus mileage.
