Nesquehoning council

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday.

• A borough safety committee was formed on Nov. 20 to provide an opportunity to look at ways to make the borough safer for its workers. Monthly committee meetings will be held and departments will be able to report anything they feel is unsafe in their department that needs to be addressed. At the end of September, the borough will then be able to apply for a 5% discount from its workers’ compensation insurance.

• Mayor Sam Kitchko reminds residents that a mailer many received from Next Door Neighbors is a scam, and they should not enter any of their personal information in the website the letter provides. Nesquehoning police, on Tuesday, said that residents should throw the letters away.

• The next Neighborhood Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the borough hall.

• Council accepted the resignation of attorney Michael Greek, zoning hearing board solicitor, effective Dec. 31.

• There are now vacancies for a zoning hearing board solicitor, as well as on the recreation commission and zoning hearing board. Letters of interest should be sent to the borough.

• The borough police report for the month of November is: total money received $2,641.77; 52 citations issued, 495 incidents reported, six crashes and 3,506 miles driven by officers on patrol.

• Approved finalizing the payment for refurbishing unit 2 at the wastewater treatment plant. The borough will pay $60,699.27 to Eastern Environmental after negotiations were agreed upon regarding liquidated damages, change orders and delays in the project. An additional change order provides the borough with an additional year warrant on the paint used in the tank, which failed after application during the project. The cost of the project was approximately $500,000.

• The borough’s reorganization meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 in the borough hall. Regular meetings will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month except in November and December when it will be the third Wednesday of the month. Workshop meetings will be at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month in January, February, March, April, May June, September and October.
