IRS: Jim Thorpe school owes $107K
The IRS says that Jim Thorpe Area School District owes $107,000 in back taxes dating to 2016.
The federal agency recently notified the school district of the unpaid taxes, and threatened to seize district property if it isn’t paid.
In a letter sent on Sept. 28, the IRS said that the district has one month to pay the bill or appeal it. If they failed to do so, the IRS could seize property starting Oct. 28.
A representative for the IRS said they cannot comment on individual taxpayers.
Superintendent John Rushefski said the district received the letter on Sept. 30, and has been in contact with the IRS to resolve the matter.
“There’s an IRS matter that Jim Thorpe Area School District is in the middle of resolving. It’s something that we discovered in late September.
“We’re following the proper protocols to resolve it,” he said.
The letter was addressed to Lauren Kovac, the district’s former business manager.
At the time the district received the letter, Kovac was under paid suspension during an investigation of the business office.
According to the invoice received by the school district, all but $3,120.37 of the amount owed comes from 2016. The invoice says the balance is related to “ESRP,” referring to the “Employee Share Responsibility Provisions” of the Affordable Care Act.
ESRP, also known as the “employer mandate” of the Affordable Care Act, requires large employers to provide health care coverage to full-time employees.
Rushefski said the district administration is still trying to determine exactly why the IRS is seeking unpaid taxes from 2016.
He said the district provides insurance to staff members as required by law.
