Local roundup: Results from Dec. 6

The Northern Lehigh girls basketball team opened the season with a non-league win over Panther Valley on Friday. Jim Thorpe, Weatherly and Pleasant Valley also picked up victories in girls basketball action.

Elsewhere, the Tamaqua boys started the season with a win over Schuylkill Valley.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Emma Niebell drilled a trio of three-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Northern Lehigh to a 44-34 non-league victory over Panther Valley.

Lauren Hoffman added 11 points for the Bulldogs (1-0).

For Panther Valley (0-1), Erika Dubosky scored a game-high 25 points.

Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Haven

Jim Thorpe picked up just where it left off a year ago, rolling to a 68-14 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven.

The Olympians, coming off an undefeated regular season in 2018-19, didn’t miss a beat as they jumped out to a 32-2 first quarter lead and cruised from there.

Olivia Smelas led a balanced Jim Thorpe (1-0) attack with 13 points. Skyler Searfoss added 11 points, and Leila Hurley and Darcy Leight chipped in 10 points apiece.

Three Pleasant Valley players scored in double figures to lead the Bears to a convincing 58-37 non-league win over Delaware Valley.

Cameron Caffrey poured in a game-high 18 points, including 11 in the second quarter when PV outscored its opponent by a 22-8 margin.

Riley Wagner contributed 17 points to the victory, while Samantha Merklin added 10.

Lucas Gregoire poured in 19 points for the winners, while Barron Stauffenberg contributed 12.
