Miller qualifies for upcoming PGA event

Northwestern graduate Cole Miller has qualified for this week’s PGA Tour event.

Miller played in 12 events on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada and finished 34th in the Order of Merit on that circuit.

He reached this week’s event, the RSM Classic, by tying for first place at a Monday qualifier that included over 100 players.

Miller shot 6-under par Monday at Brunswick Conutry Club in Brunswick, Georgia, and earned one of four places in this weekend’s field.

Miller, who played in the 2018 US Open just months after graduating from Penn State University, will tee off at 11:15 a.m. Thursday in a threesome that includes Kramer Hickok and Tyler McCumber, the son of long-time Tour player Mark McCumber.

The RSM Classic is played at Sea Island Resort in Sea Island Georgia. If Miller can play well enough in the event, he could earn status to play more PGA Tour events.

Miller was a three-time Times News Golfer of the Year, winning the award in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Cole Miller follows through after hitting a tee shot during the DC Bank Open at Uplands Golf Club on June 8. Miller, a Northwestern High School graduate, has enjoyed a successful start to his professional career. SUBMITTED PHOTO
