Eldred Supervisors

The Eldred Township Supervisors meeting slated for tonight has been canceled.

WEHA meeting

The West End Home Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. today at the post home in Gilbert.

PV schools events

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO in on the calendar for meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The PV Band Parents meeting is at 7 p.m. in the high school Band Room.

The PV Board of Education meeting is also at 7 p.m.

Legion meets

West End Memorial American Legion Post 927 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

Volunteer appreciation

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is hosting its 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Event at 6 p.m. Thursday at Shawnee Inn.

Volunteers are invited to enjoy dinner and live entertainment as a gift to them. They are asked RSVP with development@habitatmc.org or call the office directly at 570-216-4390 if planning to attend.

If anyone has not volunteered yet this year and would like to attend the volunteer appreciation event, the person can still sign up for a volunteer shift at https://www.habitatmc.org/get-involved/job-calendar, or pay the ticket price and still attend.

Chestnuthill Seniors

The Chestnuthill Senior center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday, though it is sometimes closed due to holidays.

This Friday the activity is Tai-Chi with Dolores. Next Wednesday it is Stress Relief/Holiday’s Blues with Rachel Wydra, Behavioral Health Nurse Consultant PA Department of Health, Bureau of Community Health Systems.

The light lunch one for this Friday is egg salad, juice, green bean salad, banana, whole wheat bread. The regular meal consists of cod piccata over orzo, carrots, spinach, diced pears.

For next Wednesday, the light menu is Italian hoagie, low salt chips, banana, yogurt, hoagie roll.

The regular menu lists baked ham, mashed sweet potatoes, peas, applesauce, whole wheat bread.

Attendees are reminded to call in their respective choice in by 11 a.m. the day before at either 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

Busy fire company

Chief Don Zipp of the West End Fire Company reports that the volunteers responded to 37 incidents in October, putting the department at 347 so far.

In addition, the volunteers did fire prevention for all the grades at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, the Western Pocono Community Library, some community days, and several day cares in Chestnuthill Township.

The fire company was also dealing with an arsonist in Polk Township.

Good news includes Captain Mike Manfre Jr. having passed his Professional Qualification Certification for his Fire Fighter Level II.

Donations accepted

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be accepting donations to use in the food pantry distribution for Thanksgiving. Items such as canned yams, Turkeys, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, canned vegetables, potatoes, pie filling, etc. are needed.

Donations should be brought to the Effort UMC pantry by Saturday. Any questions may be addressed to John Ostovich 732-336-9674.

The pantry is open for its regular distribution from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Tricky Tray event

The Orphan Outreach Ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will be held Saturday. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the drawing begins at 12:30 p.m.

Mass time change

Starting on Saturday, the Saturday evening Mass time at Our Lady Queen of Peace changes from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Fellowship breakfast

Effort UMC is holding its Fellowship Breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

A free will donation is greatly appreciated and that money will go into the capital improvement fund.

Legion Riders

The American Legion Riders will have its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Senior prom

A prom for Senior Citizens is being presented by the YMCA in Stroudsburg on Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Music will be by DJ Kurt Kraeutler.

Church helps

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church in Brodheadsville is asking its church family to provide a Thanksgiving turkey or funds to purchase one for passing on to the Pleasant Valley School District for some of its families that have a need.

Thanksgiving service

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will host its annual Thanksgiving service at 3 p.m. Sunday at Salem UCC in Gilbert.

Dorothy Hepner, from Salem UCC, is extending a special invitation to all PVEN member churches to have singers join a combined choir and to have members come and give thanks.

Offerings and food donations will be collected for the PVEN Food Pantry.

Choir practice for the combined choir will be at 2 p.m. on the day of the service, at the church.

Those planning to sing as part of the choir are asked to call Dorothy at 570-688-7366.

All are welcome to join the choir or to join the worship service.

Sunday supper

A community Sunday supper will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Veterans Day

A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert at 11 a.m. Monday.

There will be guest speakers, including state Sen. Mario Scavello, state Rep. Jack Rader and Staff Sgt. Daniel Hauss.

American Legion Post Commander Danny Insalata will do the POW-MIA presentation. Full military honors will be presented by the Post 927 Honor Guard. There will also be the playing of taps.

A light lunch follows the ceremony.

Give blood

If it is time to donate blood again, the nearby possibilities include the American Red Cross collection Monday at Northampton Community College’s Pocono Hall at Route 715 and Warner Road from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center is at the Western Pocono Community Library the first and third Wednesday of the month.

The drive on Nov. 13, is slated to begin at noon. To schedule a donation, call 800-B-A-DONOR (223- 6667).

Knit & Crochet

Zion’s Knit & Crochet group will meet again at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Brodheadsville. New members are always welcome.

Pie crust fundraiser

Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is doing a homemade pie crust fundraiser. Orders must be in to Ruth Rinaldi by Monday. She can be reached at 610-253-5714.

Orders must be picked up from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 or from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 17.

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is having a craft/gift fair at the Chestnuthill Park in Brodheadsville on Nov. 16.

Vendors for crafts, gifts, art, direct sellers and door prizes are sought.

UMW meets

The United Methodist Women of Effort UMC will meet at 7 p.m. Monday. Devotions will be done by Laurie Everett. She and Joyce Aylsworth are serving as hostesses. The program will be the election of officers, the 2020 budget and the 2020 Local Programs for the group’s book.

New members are welcome.

Ladies Night will be celebrated on Dec. 9.

The Pleasant Valley All Sports Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.

Touch of Home

The monthly meeting of Operation: Touch of Home will be held at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Homemade filling

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is taking orders for homemade filling for Thanksgiving. The order deadline is Nov. 15. The filling pickup is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22.

MC Garden Club

The Monroe County Garden Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 13, at the Kettle Creek Environmental Center, 8050 Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg.

The guest speaker will be Pamela Hubbard from Effort, who will present a program on garden journaling.

The Horticulture Theme will be Pocono Bare, display a tree or shrub branch, 12 to 30 inches in height.

One specimen for each clear glass container.

The Design Theme is Turkeys on Parade, designer’s choice of theme interpretation. Accessories permitted.

A light luncheon will be served, with a small cost for nonmembers. Everyone interested in gardening is invited to attend.

Birding ID series

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center and Pocono Avian Research Center are holding a Learn the Birds: Birding Identification Series, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 13.

There is a cost, though center members are free.

Tree sponsorship

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced its annual Sponsor-A-Maple Tree fundraising program.

Sponsoring a tree gives one Certificate of Sponsorship, a map of the sugarbush showing the location of one’s tree, a pint of MCEEC’s own pure maple syrup and free admission for up to four people to the annual Public Maple Sugaring Day on March 7, 2020.
