Celtic Alliance holds Irish Tin Whistle Class

Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop to be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture. There is a cost for the workshop, which take place at the office Celtic Cultural Alliance, 902 W. Fourth Ave., Suite 2, Bethlehem PA 18018.

Terry Hartzell, a uilleann piper who plays with the band Piper’s Request, has designed the workshop for beginners over age 14 who want to learn how to play traditional tunes.

Students will learn basic fingering and how to get a pleasant sound from the instrument. Hartzell will teach primarily by ear and then distribute handouts for use as reference for practicing at home. Reading music is helpful, but not required.

Students need to bring an Irish tin-whistle in the key of D, and an audio recording device, such as a smartphone or iPod. If you do not own a whistle, good beginner-to-intermediate level whistles are the Clarke Sweetone in the key of D, or Jerry Freeman’s Blackbird in the key of D.
