Changes made on Lehighton Parks & Recreation Board

Changes are on the horizon for Lehighton’s Parks & Recreation Board.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky brought the matter up for discussion at Monday’s borough council meeting.

Abelovsky explained why the changes are being considered, adding that she’s not trying to step on anyone’s toes.

“I’m just trying to find a more streamlined way of doing things,” Abelovsky said.

Further, Abelovsky said she believes that the board could “do a little bit of that extra stuff” that borough recreation director Tom Evans doesn’t have the time to get around to.

Evans said he could always use the help.

However, council President Grant Hunsicker said he would like to study the proposed changes more.

Councilman Joe Flickinger said he agreed with Hunsicker, and believes that the type of work Abelovsky was suggesting should be handled by borough employees.

Abelovsky countered that it would be “just to give them a checklist of all the things they would need in place.

Borough manager Nicole Beckett said that all applications would either have to come through her office or council.

It was decided that Parks and Recreation will no longer host events, and will follow the basis of the ordinance created for the Parks and Recreation Board.

In addition, Parks and Recreation will assist with creating checklists for groups hosting events, along with assisting Evans as requested.

Borough hall will continue to coordinate events through its processes with the support of Parks and Recreation.

Additionally, Parks and Recreation will no longer host Heritage Weekend.

However, Lehighton Downtown Initiative members in attendance confirmed they will take the event over.
