Weatherly to host cabbage festival on Saturday

October is known as the time for harvesting cabbage in Pennsylvania.

And in Carbon County, that harvest is celebrated at the annual cabbage festival in Weatherly.

The third annual event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

“If you go right out of Weatherly in either direction you have beautiful farmland. They’re our neighbors and we want to promote them,” said Weatherly Mayor Tom Connors.

The event includes live polka music, a tractor show and parade, games for kids and, of course, cabbage.

Admission and parking are free, and a long list of vendors will be selling food (with and without cabbage) and goods.

The tractor parade begins at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Plane Street. The 1-mile parade will end up at the cabbage festivals, where they will be on display throughout the day.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., halushki and coleslaw makers will compete for bragging rights and $50 in a cook-off. Entries for both the tractor show and halushki/coleslaw cook-off will be accepted at the festival.

The cabbage festival has been recognized by Gov. Tom Wolf, and organizers say it’s the first cabbage festival in the state. It draws attendees from far beyond the town of Weatherly.

“Last year we had people come from Harrisburg, Scranton, Allentown — we get a good group of people from all over and people seemed to enjoy the day when they come down,” Connors said.

The Pennsylvania Villagers polka band will take the stage at the park between 2-5:30 p.m. DJ John Thorpe will also be playing music throughout the day.

Gombert Games will be providing games for kids.

Several local organizations will be vending, including the Weatherly Area High School classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023. Cub Scout Pack 007 and Girl Scout Troop 30871, the Weatherly Recreation Committee, the Weatherly Ambulance, Summit Hill Heritage Center, Victory Bible Church, Family Promise of Carbon County, Carbon County Friends of Animals, Carbon Animal Response Team, Community Services for Sight, L&L Fire Co., Nesquehoning Fire Co., Mahoning Lions and Save Broad Mountain.

Other vendors include Coal Crackin Chicken Dip, Craftin Joy, Krakus Polish Restaurant and Deli, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Mobile Kitchen Arts & Eats, Old School, Phils French Fries, Smitties Creative Works, Tripps BBQ and Zimmerman’s Dairy.

The event is sponsored by the borough of Weatherly, Sernak Farms, Les Sincavage graphic services, Fairway Subaru, Weatherly Hillclimb Association, Affordable Dumpsters and Zimmerman’s Dairy.
