Marian, Lehighton, Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua all had strong performances in cross country action on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Marian-Pine Grove-

Nativity-Schuylkill Haven

Marian’s boys and girls both posted sweeps in a Schuylkill League meet in Schuylkill Haven.

Both the Colts and Fillies recorded wins over Nativity, Pine Grove and Schuylkill Haven.

The Fillies’ Grace Curnow crossed the finish line in first place in the girls’ meet, while teammate Lisa Napoletano followed in third place.

Gavin Vercusky and Kevin Early placed second and third, respectively, in the boys race to lead the Colts.

Jim Thorpe-Minersville- Tri-Valley-Lehighton

The Lehighton girls and Jim Thorpe boys both had perfect 4-0 days at a Schuylkill League meet in Lehighton.

In the girls meet, the Indians’ Kelsey Gaston placed first, with the Jim Thorpe duo of Katelynn Boss and Nicole Carroll finishing in third and fourth place, respectively.

In the boys meet, the Olympians’ James Schwartz led area runners with a second-place finish. The Indians’ duo of Collin Wentz and Logan Lichtenwalner finished third and fourth, respectively.

Brandon Fogarty led the Blue Raiders with a third-place finish in the boys race.

In the girls race, Brianna Dumond and Frances Kabana finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead Tamaqua.

Aiden Valentine and Derek Burcik posted the Blue Eagles’ goals.

Indians’ goalie Randy Bongiorno finished with 10 saves.

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Schuylkill Haven edged Weatherly for a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory.

Antonio Colecio posted the Wreckers’ lone goal.

Wreckers’ goalie Dalton Tompkins made four saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Northwestern rolled to a 10-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Reagan Hernandez, Lauren Schellhamer, and Greenleigh McGehee all had two goals for the Tigers. Brynn Balliet, Charlize Bobbyn, Tess Ledeboer and Charlotte Horn all added single goals. Allyson Myers had two assists.

VOLLEYBALL

Marian-Nativity

Nativity defeated Marian, 25-11, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 in a non-league match.

Alivia Karchner had nine kills and six blocks to lead the Fillies. Jamie Wheeler (six kills); Lacey Blasko (two kills, two blocks); and Rebecca Dzuranin (two kills, five blocks) also had strong games at the net. Ashlyn Klitsch had 21 assists, while Rhiannon Brady (10 digs); Macie Mazalusky (eight digs) and Tatianna Zeleniak (five digs) led the way defensively.

Southern Lehigh-Palmerton

Southern Lehigh defeated Palmerton in Colonial League action, 25-8, 25-9, 25-12.

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL

8th Grade

Panther Valley-Pine Grove

Panther Valley defeated Pine Grove, 35-29.

The Panthers’ Mikayala Yuricheck and Maddison Maynard both netted 10 points.

7th Grade

Panther Valley-Pine Grove

Pine Grove doubled up on Panther Valley for a 32-16 victory.

Maddison Whildin led the Panthers with six points.

Weatherly-Shenandoah

Shenandoah Valley defeated Weatherly, 22-20.

Bethany Houser recorded a Wreckers’ high of 13 points.
