Shawn Christy changed his mind.

The 27-year-old McAdoo man is facing criminal charges in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, as well as federal charges. In March 2019, during a hearing in Schuylkill County court, Christy said he wanted his federal trial first, asking that his Schuylkill County charges be put on hold. That request was granted by President Judge William E. Baldwin.

Christy was back in Schuylkill County court Tuesday, before Baldwin, asking to go to trial. Baldwin scheduled jury selection for Oct. 15, with the trial to follow, most likely to begin between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1.

That will just squeeze it in before Christy’s federal trial, slated for the week of Nov. 12. Christy’s Schuylkill trial stems from a March 2017 case, when he was charged with four felony counts of aggravated assault and two misdemeanors for simple assault after an altercation with Stephan Holley. Holley was then mayor of McAdoo.

According to police reports, Christy was angry over snow removal and swung a stick at Holley. Before Mike O’Pake became Schuylkill County’s District Attorney, he served as a public defender. In that role, he was assigned to defend Shawn Christy in the case involving Holley.

Last week, Christy was in Schuylkill County court before Judge Jacqueline Russell seeking to have O’Pake transferred from his cases; both Russell and O’Pake agreed. The Christy case involving Holley will be prosecuted by Berks County Assistant District Attorney Jordan Fegley.

“The hearing was uneventful,” Fegley said. “The judge addressed all the defendant’s motions, and we will be picking a jury Oct. 15.”

Christy faces a number of charges at the county and federal levels. He failed to appear for jury selection for his trial in the Holley case in June 2018, fleeing from the law for 113 days. According to police reports, he traveled to Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, stealing vehicles and firearms during that time. He was captured in Ohio September 20.

During his time on the lam, Christy allegedly broke into Skipper Dippers restaurant, Route 309, Hometown. In Schuylkill County, he faces burglary, theft and criminal mischief from that incident. He also faces charges in Carbon County, where he allegedly broke into a business.

Additional federal charges stem from Christy’s alleged Facebook threats to Northhampton District Attorney John M. Morganelli and President Donald Trump. Christy is currently incarcerated in Schuylkill County Prison.
