Local Roundup: Results from Oct. 5

Jim Thorpe and Northwestern both picked up boys soccer victories on Saturday.

Pleasant Valley field hockey, Tamaqua girls soccer and Panther Valley volleyball also record wins.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Palmerton

Jim Thorpe picked up a 2-1 non-league victory over Palmerton.

Marc Waslesyn and Thor Huth posted the Olympian goals, while Alex Putt and Jack Morris were credited with assists.

The Bombers’ Nic Singleton spoiled the shutout with a late second-half goal.

Both goalies were busy as Jim Thorpe’s Jacob Geiser and Palmerton’s Bryce Yacone both stopped 14 shots.

Hazleton-Lehighton

Hazleton defeated Lehighton, 4-1, in non-league action.

Carter Strauss scored the Indians’ lone goal.

Gabriel Fabian led the Cougars with two goals.

Indians’ goalie Randy Bongiorno finished with 12 saves.

Freedom-Northwestern

Northwestern doubled up on Freedom for a 4-2 non-league victory.

Luke Bryan, Josh Zellner, Ryan Baker and Jason Blaine all finished with goals for the Tigers. Zellner, Jeff Garcia, Colin Coffeild and Seth Brady recorded assists.

Schuylkill Haven-Tamaqua

Two second-half goals put Schuylkill Haven over the top in a 2-1 win over Tamaqua.

Michael McGoey and Bryce Sisko accounted for the Hurricanes’ goals.

Ian Davis had the Blue Raider’s lone goal.

Tamaqua goalie Nathaniel Noft made five saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pottsville-Lehighton

Pottsville blanked Lehighton for a 4-0 Schuylkill League win.

Cora Alvarez led the Tide with a goal and an assist, while Alexia Maccarone, Olivia Hernandez and Ryleigh Cook all finished with goals.

Northwestern-Liberty

Liberty recorded a 1-0 non-league overtime victory over Northwestern.

The Hurricanes’ Catherine Kelly scored with 7:28 left in the first overtime off an assist from Julie Curti.

Northwestern goalie Naomi Glassberg had three saves, while Hurricanes’ keeper Destiny Deschamps recorded 19 saves to get the shutout win.

Northwestern slips to 15-2 overall, while Liberty improves to 9-8.

Tamaqua-Catasauqua

Tamaqua edged Catasauqua for a 3-2 non-league win.

Emma Kuczynski paced the Blue Raiders with two goals, while Katie Rudy also added a score. Logan Hartney and Rebekah Hromyak both had assists.

Haleigh Toto posted both of the Roughies’ goals.

Tamaqua goalie Baylee Reinhardt finished with 10 saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Mattie Hyland’s overtime goal lifted Pleasant Valley to a 2-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain West.

Hyland, off an assist from Arianna Mulligan, also accounted for the Bears’ first goal.

Pleasant Valley, which improved to 4-13 on the season, finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots, and had eight corners to the Panthers’ seven.

Lehighton-Berwick

Lehighton posted a 4-0 victory over Berwick.

VOLLEYBALL

Northwestern-Allen

Northwestern posted a a 25-9, 19-25, 25-17, 27-29, 15-7 non-league win over William Allen.

Mahanoy A.-Panther Valley

Panther Valley defeated Mahanoy Area in a non-league match, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19.

Jenna Dubosky led the Panthers with 17 assists, two kills, four digs and three aces. Giana Steber (16 assists, four digs), Erika Dubosky (14 digs, nine kills, two aces) and Olivia Dacey (nine kills, six digs) also contributed to the Panther Valley victory.
