Carbon commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners, on Thursday, discussed or acted on the following items.

• Bill Richards, deputy chief of staff for state Sen. John Yudichak, presented county solicitor Daniel Miscavige with a citation for his dedication to the county and community. Miscavige was recently named the Solicitor of the Year by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.

• Garry Wentz of PA CareerLink was at the meeting to announce the organization is there to help answer questions regarding unemployment for all KME employees affected by the recent layoffs.

• Approved a proposal with Communications Systems Integrators of Allentown for the replacement of the intercom system at the Carbon County Correctional Facility. The costs associated with the project are $23,673.85 for materials upon delivery and $25,714.15 for installation and completion.

• Approved the 2019 State Homeland Security Grant Program agreement with the Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Counter Terrorism Task Force for $951,016 to be used by task force counties, which include Carbon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Susquehanna and Wayne counties. The term of the grant is from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2022.

• Approved a memorandum of understanding between Carbon Career & Technical Institute and the Carbon County Correctional Facility for GED services for inmates 21 and older. Services are provided to the county at no cost and are funded through Lehigh Carbon Community College from the state Department of Education Act 231 Federal Literacy Grant. The contract is in effect through June 30, 2020.
