West End Fire Co. to honor firefighters

The West End Volunteer Fire Company is organizing a Light the Night week and Remembrance Ceremony to honor 92 United States firefighters who lost their lives in 2018 and those who lost their lives this year.

About 10 of these firefighters are from Pennsylvania, Vice President Bill Koehler said.

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 6, the fire company is asking businesses and community residents to display red lights outside their shops and homes. These can be red Christmas lights, red bulbs placed inside regular porch lights, etc.

At 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, a Fallen Firefighters Remembrance Ceremony will be held at Chestnuthill Township Park off of Route 715 in Brodheadsville. The public is invited to attend and to bring chairs or blankets for seating.

Speakers will include state Rep. Jack Rader, state Sen. Mario Scavello, and the Chestnuthill Township supervisors, among others.

The American Legion Post 927 will attend as well as United States Honor Flag.

Fire companies are welcome to attend in Class A uniform and to bring their apparatus.

The fire company is working with Pleasant Valley School District to organize musical performances at the event as well, but this has not been confirmed yet, Koehler said.
