Access road to proposed fire training site finished

The widening of Emergency Lane in Nesquehoning, which will serve as the access road to the new Emergency Training Center, has been finished, but the county is hitting a slight delay with starting the next phase thanks to Hurricane Dorian.

On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the county received the geospatial study findings, but the engineer who needs to look at them is currently in the Bahamas on a task force helping with recovery and rescue efforts.

“It’s a little bit of a setback because he is the one who has to look at the study to make sure the foundation is good enough to put a building there,” Nothstein said, adding that he hopes the next phase will be able to be put out to bid next month as planned.

In the meantime, crews can be seen on the site working on the wetland areas that needed to be restored as part of the project.

The access road has been a base coat on it, but the county plans to hold off on the final coat until phase 2 of the project is complete.

“Otherwise, we’re pretty well complete with that phase (1A),” Nothstein said.
