Korean Ambassador for Peace medal ceremony planned

During a meeting Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners and county Director of Veterans Affairs Brenda Griffiths-Zechman announced a Korean Ambassador for Peace medal ceremony Nov. 1 in the county courthouse.

The medal is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to U.S. service men and women who served in the Korean conflict. To be eligible, the veterans must have served the country during the Korean War from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. It is also available for the veterans who have participated in U.N. peacekeeping operations until the end of 1955.

To establish eligibility, a veteran needs a copy of his or her DD 214. The DD 214 is the certificate of release or discharge from active duty issued upon a military service member’s retirement, separation or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. All applications must be in the Veterans Affairs office by Sept. 15. For more information, call 570-628-1400 or 570-628-1401.

In other action, the commissioners:

Approved eight employees of Domestic Relations to attend the annual statewide training conference in Harrisburg from Sept. 22-26.

Approved an ordinance for intergovernmental cooperation by Schuylkill County in HARP, the Health Alliance of Rural Pennsylvania. By participating, the county joins 23 other counties in order to pool finances to get mental health and developmental services. The action was requested by Elaine Gilbert, administrator, county Drug and Alcohol unit.

Approved a $14,427 contract with Northeast Industrial Services in Shamokin for a demolition project at 314 W. Center St., Frailey Township.
