East Penn doesn’t act on fair legislative districts proposal

The East Penn Township board of supervisors did not act on a proposal to support the “Fair Legislative Districts of Pennsylvania” measure that has been introduced by the state to tackle the issue of gerrymandering in congressional districts.

The state is attempting to garner local backing for this measure, asking the township to sign a resolution in support of “Fair Legislative Districts,” and permission to send their support along to the appropriate government officials.

Chairman William Schwab said, “I don’t know if that’s really our place to get involved.”

Subsequently, the resolution was dead on arrival — no motion was introduced to support it.

In other business, the board voted:

• Authorization to fix a rotting pipe on Lauchnor Road.

• Approval of the Developers Agreement and O&M Stormwater Agreements in relation to the Dollar General Land Development Plan, a step forward in the planning of a new Dollar General in the township.

• Renewal for Life/Short and Long-Term Disability Insurance, which will see a $75 increase for long-term disability for the year.

• Approval to follow suit of the neighboring municipalities for the date of Trick-or-Treat Night, as well as approval of Trunk-or-Treat Night at the local playground.

• Renewal of the Liquor Law Liability Insurance for the year.

• Approval of the 2020 Minimum Municipal Obligations for the Non-Uniform Pension Plan, which will cost $41,686 for the year, an increase of about $600 from 2019.

• A recycling event, for East Penn Township residents only, held from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 26 at the East Penn Township Municipal Building.

Supervisor Deanna Cunfer was absent from the meeting.
