Carbon County’s first crematorium is being planned by the Moyer-Zimmerman Funeral Home of 215 S. Third St., Lehighton.

The nearest crematory, according to sources, is the Cedar Hill Crematorium in Whitehall.

The funeral home’s plans came to light during a meeting of the Carbon County commissioners, when Kent R. Moyer, owner-manager, notified the commissioners that the funeral home has applied for an air quality control permit with the state Department of Environmental Resources.

Moyer said the funeral home has received a zoning permit from the borough, whose manager, Mortimer Smedley, said the use is permitted in the borough’s zoning ordinance.
