Monroe man charged in stabbing incident

A Monroe County man has been jailed on attempted homicide and related offenses following a stabbing incident that occurred at 1:31 a.m. Thursday.

State police at Stroudsburg said troopers responded to a residence along Little Bear Lane in Middle Smithfield Township for a reported stabbing incident. Troopers said those involved had called 911 and reported the victim of the stabbing was being transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital Campus, East Stroudsburg, by a friend. It was later learned that an EMS unit, dispatched to the scene, met the parties and transferred the victim to the EMS unit and took him to the hospital.

According to troopers, this is what happened:

Troopers learned that Jose Collado, no address given, and Christopher Cannarella, 26, of Bartonsville, had gone to the Little Bear Lane address to pick up a female friend who had been involved in a physical altercation with her boyfriend, identified as Tyler Papastefanou, 28, of East Stroudsburg. Upon arriving at the scene, Papastefanou ran toward the vehicle and stabbed Cannarella three times, striking him in the arm and the leg. Collado and Cannarella then fled the scene and called 911.

Papastefanou also fled the scene and subsequently crashed his vehicle. Troopers found him passed out behind the steering wheel of the vehicle. The woman was picked up by another male friend shortly after the stabbing and was interviewed by troopers. She said she and Papastefanou were involved in a physical domestic incident during which she suffered injuries to her face, arm and feet. She was choked, kicked, hit and thrown to the ground multiple times.

Papastefanou has been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, strangulation, recklessly endangering another person and driving under the influence. He was hospitalized after the crash but later released and arraigned before a district judge.

Papastefanou is currently an inmate in the county prison in Snydersville.
