Vandals hit bathrooms at The Grove, Baer

Comfort stations at several recreational facilities in Lehighton have been vandalized.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said at Monday’s borough council meeting that the borough was having “major issues at the comfort stations.”

The comfort stations at both The Grove and Baer Memorial have been vandalized.

Abelovsky noted that the borough just had new basketball courts installed at Baer Memorial.

Borough police Chief Brian Biechy said police have had to deal with vandalism at The Grove for the past 30 years.

“They back up the bathrooms and they vandalize it,” Biechy said. “My thought is do the Portajohns.”

Borough recreation director Tom Evans said, “They were putting stones down the toilets. We had to rip up the floor in the comfort station and out to the outside line.”

Evans added, “That’s why we don’t keep them open during the day.”

Evans said they just invested $10,000 into The Grove bathrooms less than a year ago.

“The vandalism is crazy,” he said. “No idea who did that.”

Last month, Evans told council there needs to be a better camera system in place at the Grove and recreation center due to vandalism.

Evans said at that time he could use a part-time maintenance person to assist him from April through September.

Biechy said anyone with information on the vandalism done to the comfort stations should contact the borough police department at 610-377-4003.
