Tamaqua native concludes career with Notre Dame

A Tamaqua native recently retired after a 36-year career at the University of Notre Dame.

Bob Mundy, a Tamaqua High School and Notre Dame graduate, retired as director of admissions for the university.

He was a well thought of employee of the university as was highlighted in a recent posting on the university’s website announcing his retirement and his replacement at the position.

Don Bishop, associate vice president of undergraduate admissions, said, “Bob Mundy has provided Notre Dame with a deep sense of wisdom and thoughtful caring in his 36-year career. Bob’s stature in the national community of admissions leaders and high school counselors has represented exactly the type of intelligent, thorough and spiritual approach that matches the University mission.”

Bishop added, “To many, Bob reflects the best of what is thought of about Notre Dame. At the University, many offices and leaders have relied on Bob for his wisdom and thoroughness on all matters relating to admission. He will be missed for his professionalism, openness, collegiality and most of all for his innate goodness. Everyone at Notre Dame who has interacted with Bob over the years admires him. He is one of the most respected department leaders in the history of the University. He has also been an inspiration, friend, counselor and mentor to so many students.”

Christy Pratt was named to succeed Mundy. The university said Mundy will assist Pratt with her onboarding to the Notre Dame Enrollment Division and South Bend community before Mundy officially begins his retirement in August.

Mundy was also recently honored with a 2019 Presidential Awards for staff. In announcing his recognition, the university said of Mundy, “Bob is a champion of the Notre Dame mission. In his position as director of admissions, he conveys the University as the unique and significant college opportunity — where one finds their greater sense of self and purpose. Bob has visited more than 1,000 high schools and given more than 2,500 presentations to groups of students and parents. He has managed 300,000 freshman application decisions and enrolled 44,000 students, while mentoring more than 100 young alumni whose first professional job was with the Office of Admissions.”

After graduating from Notre Dame, Mundy returned to Tamaqua and was a teacher in the high school and a coach. He spent seven years at Tamaqua High School before returning to Notre Dame beginning his career in the admissions office.

Mundy is married to the former Barbara Gimble, of Tamaqua, and they have a daughter Claire. She is a Notre Dame graduate and is currently employed by the university.
