I-81 crash ties up traffic

A crash along Interstate 81 in Luzerne County, near Hazleton, tied up the northbound lanes of the highway for over two hours Wednesday forcing detour traffic onto local roads.

State police at Hazleton said the rear-end crash was reported at 10:31 a.m. in Butler Township. Troopers said a Kenworth commercial dump truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle towing a U-haul trailer. There were five occupants in the vehicle, a man, a woman and three minor children. Police did not releases

their names were not immediately available.

The driver of the truck was identified as James T. Gyle, 48, of Hunlock Creek. Luzerne County.

Troopers said all the occupants of the vehicle and Gyle were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries.

The northbound lanes were closed for about two hours. The investigation into the crash is continuing.
