Fern Ridge State Police report on traffic stops

State police at Fern Ridge reported on incidents investigated.

• On April 20 at 2:08 p.m. troopers stopped Javon Laney, 30, of Tobyhanna, along Interstate 80 westbound in Kidder Township, Carbon County, for following too closely. At the stop troopers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A probable cause search was conducted and 86.5 grams of marijuana were seized.

Laney was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and other drug-related charges.

• On May 24 at 8:25 p.m. Terri Sparks, 23, of Tobyhanna, was stopped for speeding along Interstate 80 westbound in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County. At the stop troopers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a clear plastic bag containing 5.7 grams of marijuana. A red cylindrical grinder containing marijuana was also found.

Sparks was charged with drug possession and related counts.

• On June 1 troopers stopped a vehicle along Route 940 at Benner Court in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County, for a traffic violation. At the stop the driver was identified as Terrence Russell, 53, of Blakeslee. Troopers detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. He was asked to exit the vehicle and he became uncooperative and resisted arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the county DUI center for a blood draw. Charges of driving under the influence, drug possession and other counts are pending.
