Where We Live: The power of positivity

A famous man once said that life is like a box of chocolates.

So were the famed words spoken by Tom Hanks in the 1994 movie “Forrest Gump.”

“My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

Talk about being spot-on, as that metaphor is relatable on so many levels.

Quite frankly, none of us know what’s in store from one day to the next.

Since we don’t know, why waste our time worrying about the “what ifs.”

According to the website www.powerofpositivity.com, there are 25 things we should never regret doing.

• Saying those three little words that can change everything.

• Taking silly pictures with your friends and family.

• Going on a spontaneous road trip with no particular destination in mind.

• Chasing your dreams.

• Seeing the beauty in everything.

• Loving with all of your heart.

• Not holding back an ounce of your being.

• Being yourself, even when the world tries to tame you.

• Acting before thinking.

• Smiling at strangers.

• Giving people compliments.

• Quitting a job you hate.

• Choosing happiness every single day of your life.

• Facing your biggest fears.

• Taking time for you.

• Acting like a kid when everyone tells you to grow up.

• Opening up to people despite the walls you’ve built around your heart.

• Giving people a second chance.

• Becoming your own best friend.

• Being able to laugh at yourself.

• Going to all the concerts you possibly can.

• Learning new things.

• Eating junk food every once in a while.

• Stargazing with your favorite people.

• Living while you can.

To further cement the premise behind this column, I’ll leave you with parts of the lyrics from the song “My Way” by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

“Regrets, I’ve had a few

“But then again, too few to mention

“I did what I had to do

“And saw it through without exemption

“I planned each charted course

“Each careful step along the byway

“And more, much more than this

“I did it my way.”

Sounds like a life well-lived.

The kind of life each and every one of us should strive for.
