LCCC student receives national scholarship

A Lehigh Carbon Community College student has received a national scholarship from the Phi Theta Kappa honor society that will cover the fees associated with the national nursing licensing exam. Wendy Strock, a nursing student at LCCC, has been named a 2019 Hurst Scholar, one of only 15 students nationwide and the only one from Pennsylvania.

Strock, of Weatherly, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and is a graduate of Overbrook Regional Senior High School in Pine Hill, New Jersey. She is a nontraditional student and a single working mother with two daughters and a grandson. Before moving to Carbon County, she worked as a certified cardiographic technician. She then worked for 10 years in construction until her younger daughter graduated from high school. Strock will graduate from the Licensed Practical Nursing program in August, then transition to the Associate Degree in Nursing program for her RN degree.

“This scholarship is helping me to be able to achieve my goal, and I am very grateful,” Strock said.

The Hurst Review NCLEX Scholarships help cover the cost of the NCLEX exam fees and study materials. The scholarship, funded by national nursing exam prep company Hurst Review Services, is exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa nursing majors who plan to take the National Council Licensure Examination.

The NCLEX is a standardized exam given by each state’s board of nursing to determine if RN or LPN candidates are competent for entry-level nursing practice.
