Son of Tamaqua native graduates from Naval Academy

Ensign Shawn Anthony Kluchinsky of Abingdon, Maryland, son of retired U.S. Army major and a 1983 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, Dr. Timothy A. Kluchinsky Jr. and Aunika Kluchinsky, was commissioned on May 24 as an officer in the U.S. Navy, along with 1,052 of his U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman classmates.

Kluchinsky majored in oceanography at the Naval Academy. He played club lacrosse for two years at positions of faceoff and defender, and helped the lacrosse team capture the 2016 National Club Lacrosse League Championship. He played sprint football for two years as a defensive lineman and was a member of the 2018 National Collegiate Sprint Football League Championship Team, where he was named 2018 Second Team All-Collegiate Sprint Football League.

Kluchinsky also wrestled in the 165-pound weight class while attending the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Kluchinsky will report to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia as a Surface Warfare Officer in June. His father graduated from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine in preventive medicine and biometrics in 2001, and retired from the U.S. Army in 2007. His mother graduated from the Georgetown University School of Medicine Center for Sight in 2000. His brother Timothy III is studying to be an engineer. The family resides in Abingdon, Maryland.
