Write-ins create races in Weatherly, Packer Township

Write-in votes have created races in Weatherly and Packer Township.

Here is what resulted from the recent certification of write-in votes in the Northern Carbon County area by the county’s board of elections:

Weatherly

Mayor Tom Connors did not seek re-election to his position and the only candidate for the post on the ballot was retired Magisterial District Judge Paul J. Hadzick, a Republican.

But Connors, a Democrat, received 68 write-in votes to win his party’s nomination and the two candidates will now square off against each other in November.

Packer Township

The residents of Packer Township are scheduled to elect three supervisors this year, for terms of two, four and six years.

For the six-year term, Democrat Paul W. Bray and Republican Robert B. Selert were unopposed on their respective ballots, as was Republican Terry Davis, who is running unopposed for the four-year term.

Two people received sufficient write-in votes from their respective parties to win nominations and advance to the General Election. Democrat John Floyd Jr. won his party’s bid with 29 votes while Cory Gerhard, a Republican, collected 65 write-in votes. The two will go against each other to decide the seat.

Beaver Meadows

Kevin F. Hines was a successful write-in vote winner on both the Democratic and Republican ballots to win nominations for four four-year terms available on the Beaver Meadows Borough Council.

He received 10 Democratic votes and 28 GOP votes.

There were only three candidates for the four positions, including Democrats Alfred J. Mitcho Jr., Anthony A. Rusnock and Martha Steber.

In another write-in effort, Thad Williams is going to be the apparent new mayor of the community. No one ran for the post, including incumbent Jeffrey Bobish. Williams will be a Democratic candidate by virtue of having received 12 write-in vote from party members, and he also garnered the support of 34 GOP voters via the write-in process to have his name appear on both ballots.

Lehigh Township

In the only other write-in effort in northern Carbon County, Danelle Davis received 16 Republican write-in votes in Lehigh Township to win the nomination for a six-year term on the board of auditors.
