Carbon sheriff, coroner secure spots on ballots for 2nd terms

Two Carbon County officeholders — Sheriff Anthony Harvilla and Coroner Robert W. Miller Jr. — locked up re-election bids during the primary election held on May 21. Both gained sufficient write-in votes to win dual nominations on the ballot for second four-year terms.

The two Democrats were unopposed on their party’s ballot and while there were no Republican candidates for either position, they received in excess of the 100-vote requirement to win the vacant nomination.

Harvilla, of Tresckow, received 3,854 Democratic votes and then collected 121 write-in votes from GOP members while Miller, a resident of Mahoning Township, tallied 3,819 Democratic votes and 135 Republican write-in votes. The two men were elected to their first four-year terms in 2015.

Meanwhile, there were no significant changes in the vote totals of county candidates upon the completion of the official recertification of the vote by election office personnel. The county’s board of elections certified the following results:

Commissioner

Democrats Rocky Ahner, Lehighton, 2,460 votes, and Robert “Bob” Jacobs, Towamensing Township, 2,339 votes, won nominations over Shawn M. Kresge, Penn Forest Township, 1,958 votes.

Republicans Wayne E. Nothstein, an incumbent from Lehighton, 2,757 votes, and Chris Lukasevich, Jim Thorpe, 2,521 votes, won nominations over incumbent Tom J. Gerhard, Packer Township, 2,391 votes, Jason Frey, Franklin Township, 1,913 votes, and Tom Boyko, Lansford, 478 votes.
