Six area players on Carpenter Cup roster

Six area baseball players have been named to the 2019 Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup roster.

Three are from Northwestern, while the other three are from Pleasant Valley.

The team, which will compete in the annual event held by the Philadelphia Phillies, will open play on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the FDR Park in Philadelphia.

Tigers who made the team include sophomore pitcher Carter Welch, sophomore shortstop Rafe Perich, and senior first baseman Derek Holmes.

Bears on the team are junior catcher Dallas Greenzweig, junior pitcher Dan McEvoy, and sophomore outfielder Brandon Ratti.

In addition to the six players above, Pleasant Valley’s Matt Burnett was selected to the squad but is unable to play due to injury. Also, Palmerton’s Ryan King and Northwestern’s Justin Holmes were named as two of the nine alternates.

Sixteen teams will be competing for the overall title, which was last won by Lehigh Valley in 2011.

The club is managed by Ted Plessl, who coached Palmerton for 30 seasons and has been involved with the Carpenter Cup for many years. Former Pleasant Valley pitcher Jeremy Gigliotti, who was drafted by the Padres in 2011, is an assistant coach.

Also, on Monday at the FDR Park the Carpenter Cup will hold a “Skills Day” which is similar to a scouting combine in front of college coaches and MLB scouts. Four players, including Northwestern’s Perich, will represent the LV franchise.
