Man charged with stabbing

A Saylorsburg man has been charged with stabbing a man during a robbery in Lehighton.

Anthony Richard Rush, 24, faces several charges of robbery with serious injury, aggravated assault; simple assault; theft by unlawful taking — movable property and receiving stolen property.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Matt Arner of the Lehighton Borough Police Department:

At 5:51 p.m. May 25, Lehighton police officer Trevin Green was dispatched to the area of Dunbar Bottling for a report of a robbery and stabbing.

When Green arrived, the victim was lying on the ground and being treated by bystanders for cuts to his right shoulder, right hand and left hand.

Before the victim was transported to the hospital, he told Green that he was parked in his vehicle when two men entered the vehicle.

He said the two men took a duffel bag containing $400, debit cards, driver’s license and house keys from him.

The victim added that one of the men stabbed him in the shoulder and hands with a black knife.

While processing the scene, Franklin Township police officer Frank Buonaiuto talked to two witnesses.

One witness said she heard a commotion in the parking lot of Dunbar Bottling, and saw three men in a black Nissan Rogue.

She said the vehicle sped out of the parking lot. She took a photograph of the vehicle and license plate as it left.

The other witness said he saw two men running from the D&L Trail to a small black SUV parked in the Dunbar Bottling parking lot.

He said that one of the men had a “man bun” hairstyle, and that the driver of the vehicle looked directly at him when they were leaving.

He described the suspect as being bald, with facial hair and wearing glasses, and said he would be able to identify him.

The vehicle license plate from the photo came back to a Nissan Rogue SUV. Police learned the owner of the vehicle was in a relationship with a man who matched the description given by one of the witnesses.

The driver, Nathan Gilman, was positively identified by one of the witnesses through a photo lineup on May 28.

Video surveillance from Dunbar Bottling showed a black SUV park in the western end of the parking lot at around 5:15 p.m.

At 5:46 p.m., two men dressed in white shirts ran to the car and entered the SUV on the passenger side. The vehicle left the lot.

On May 28, the victim told police he had made arrangements for Rush to buy $300 worth of THC vape cartridges from him.

He said that he agreed to meet Rush at the parking lot of the D&L Trail in Lehighton for the transaction.

At that time, the victim said that Rush and another man, whom he described as having a darker complexion, came to his vehicle, both approaching from the passenger side.

The victim said that Rush entered the vehicle from the passenger door and the other man entered from the rear passenger door, sliding behind him on the drivers side.

He said that Rush looked at him and said, “You know you are getting robbed.”

The victim added that the man behind him said that he had a “piece,” and that Rush grabbed the cartridges at that time.

The victim said he had a small Adidas duffel bag in his center console which contained his personal belongings (keys, driver’s license), money ($400 in cash) and keys, and that both Rush and the other man said that they wanted the bag.

The victim said no and grabbed the bag. The man behind him stabbed him.

The victim said that during the encounter, Rush and the other man were able to take the bag from him, and that he last saw them running toward Dunbar Bottling.

Rush is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail, and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing June 12 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.

Charges are pending against Gilman.
