Lansford music in the park series to resume

The Lansford Alive Events committee will resume its “Music in the Park” series on Sunday. This is the sixth season for the program held at the gazebo at Kennedy Park, which is located at the west end of the borough next to the Panther Valley football stadium.

The series is held from 6 to 8 p.m. and is free of charge. A concession stand will offer refreshments for sale with the proceeds used to revitalize Kennedy Park. The committee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the park.

Marie Ondrus and Irma Leibensperger are the chairwomen for the program and were instrumental in getting the series underway in 2014.

Since its inception, the committee has been using the profits from the concessions and sales to make numerous improvements in the park. Some of those improvements include: removal of all the dead or decaying tress and shrubbery, trimming and pruning the existing ones, painting all of the park benches, and adding garbage cans to help keep the park clean.

The work also included power washing the 40-year-old coal miners monument and refurbishing it back to its original beauty and statue, a symbol to the heritage of the local coal miners.

The committee also renovated the Lehigh Navigation and Coal Company car back to its original form, with the help of students from the Carbon Career and Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe. The park’s electrical system has been updated, which includes outlets, lights and fuse boxes.

Future projects include: replacing the roof on the gazebo; repairing and repainting the banisters inside the gazebo; installing carnival lights for better visibility during the late nights in August; installing a tent or pavilion for rainy concerts; and swing sets for the kids.

The committee hopes the public continues its support of the concert series so these improvements to the park can be made.
