The Oakland A’s had the “Bash Brothers” in Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, who were the best power hitting combo of their time.

The Golden State Warriors have the “Splash Brothers” in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, who are the best three-pointing shooting duo in NBA history.

So, it’s only fitting that after the incredible season Northwestern hitters Rafe Perich and Derek Holmes have put together at the plate, that they be deemed the “Smash Brothers” of the Times News area.

The “Smash Brothers” have combined for an outlandish 87 hits, 66 RBIs and nine home runs on the season.

The pair didn’t disappoint on Wednesday against Jim Thorpe in the District 11 4A quarterfinals.

Holmes and Perich combined for six hits and six RBIs, helping the Tigers (20-3) roll to a 12-5 victory over the Olympians.

The Northwestern bats wasted no time getting started, jumping out to an 8-0 lead after three innings. Derek Holmes, Justin Holmes and Carter Welch collected two RBIs apiece, and Perich added an RBI during that span.

It was the start the Tigers have grown accustom to in their home ball park.

“We’re a good hitting team, but when we’re playing at home I feel even better about our lineup. You hate to say it, but our field is a home run park, and we’ve hit quite a few home runs at home this year,” said Tigers head coach Duran Porrino. “So, when a guy misses his spot here, you can really do some damage, and that’s what we were able to do today.”

Jim Thorpe could have easily folded down eight runs, but put together a strong fourth inning, scoring four runs to put a little pressure back on Northwestern. Jared Marykwas had two RBIs in the inning, with Evan Dart and Colin Binder also adding RBIs.

“All season long, no matter what the situation, our kids have never given up. Not many people expected us to get here after a 4-16 season last year, but our kids worked hard,” said Thorpe head coach Joe Marykwas. “I’m really proud of our kids; this season is something we can build off of.”

But as they have all season long, the Northwestern bats thwarted the opposition’s momentum, coming right back by scoring two runs in the fourth to extend its lead. The final blow from the Tigers came in the bottom of the sixth when Derek Holmes went deep with one on to finalize the win.

LEADERS ... Derek Holmes led the way for the Tigers with four hits and five RBIs. Justin Holmes and Welch each added two RBIs. For JT, Evan Dart led the team with two hits.

NEXT UP ... No. 2 seed Northwestern will take on No. 3 seed Wilson at DeSales University at noon on Saturday.
