Complimentary votes are order of day in Northern Carbon municipalities

There were no contested races in the seven municipalities in northern Carbon County on Tuesday, although voters of both the Democratic and Republican parties decided nominations for the various positions that will be up for grabs in the General Election.

Here is the way the Primary Election balloting looked in those municipalities:

Banks Township

There will be a race in the Fall between Democrat William J. Nice and Republican Richard P. Hornick Sr. for a six-year term on the township’s board of supervisors.

Both men were unopposed yesterday with Nice getting 126 token votes from the Democrats and Hornick collecting 46 complimentary votes from his party members.

Democrat Mary Beth Pelley was the only other candidate on the ballot in Banks. She is seeking a six-year term on the board of auditors and received 125 complimentary votes.

Lausanne Township

The lone candidate on the Lausanne Township ballot yesterday was Democrat Edward Klynowsky. He received 12 token votes.

The township voters are also scheduled to elect someone to be an auditor for a six-year term.

Lehigh Township

Lehigh Township had only one candidate on its ballot yesterday as well.

Republican Wayne Wagner collected 66 token votes in winning his party’s nomination for a six-year term on the board of supervisors.

The Lehigh voters are supposed to elect two auditors this year (six- and two-year terms).

Packer Township

In an unusual twist, all three supervisor’s seats in Packer Township are up for grabs this year.

For the six-year term, Democrat Paul W. Bray and Republican Robert B. Selert will square off in November for the position. Bray received 53 complimentary votes yesterday while Selert collected 106 token votes.

Republican Terry Davis was the lone candidate for the four-year term. He received 166 token votes. There were 24 write-in votes cast for the Democratic nomination for that seat, although the county’s election board will have to determine if anyone received sufficient votes to win that nomination.

Likewise, 51 Democrats and 138 Republicans cast write-in votes for the two-year term as supervisor. Winners of those nominations will have to be determined in the countywide canvas.

The Packer voters are also slated to fill a six-year term on the board of auditors.

Beaver Meadows

Write-in votes for a two-year term as Beaver Meadows mayor were received yesterday, including 18 from Democrats and 35 from Republicans. The county’s election bureau will determine if anyone won either nomination.

Meanwhile, three Democrats were unopposed for four four-year terms on borough council. Alfred J. Mitcho Jr. led the way with 42 votes while Anthony A. Rusnock and Martha Steber tallied 41 votes each. There were also 28 Republican write-in votes.

East Side

Three Democrats were unopposed for nominations for three four-year terms on the East Side Borough Council. They include Rudolph C. Schoch, Helen Stockinger and John P. Marotta. Each of them received 16 token votes. Running against them in the Fall will be Republican John Ciepel, who was unopposed on that side yesterday and received 18 complimentary votes.

Weatherly

Republican Paul J. Hadzick was the only filed candidate for the four-year term as mayor of Weatherly yesterday. He received 129 token votes.

But there were also 93 write-in votes cast for the Democratic nomination, so it remains to be seen if Hadzick has an opponent in November.

Weatherly voters are also scheduled to elect two persons to four-year terms on the borough council. Two Republicans, Joseph Cyburt and George E. Miller Jr., were unopposed yesterday and received 211 and 172 token votes, respectively. Democrat Joseph A. Thomas was unchallenged yesterday as well. He collected 129 complimentary votes and will run against Cyburt and Miller in the Fall.
