Coaldale to purchase new police vehicle

Coaldale is planning to purchase a new police vehicle using about $36,000 in grant funds.

Council learned Tuesday night that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the borough’s proposal to purchase a new police vehicle with funds from the agency’s Rural Development Program.

Borough Treasurer Anissa Nunemacher told council members that the borough is just waiting for USDA to send a letter stating that it has committed to release the funds.

“The project is approved, we just need the final letter saying it’s been obligated to us,” Nunemacher said.

The borough plans to use the grant to buy a new pickup for the police department. The truck will be purchased from Kovatch Ford at a cost of approximately $48,000.

The borough will only have to pay $12,000, because the USDA grant covers three-quarters of the cost of the proposal.

In 2017, the borough purchased a $42,000 police vehicle through the same grant program. The borough’s share was $10,574.

Councilwoman Claire Remington said she is thankful that the borough is receiving grant funds.

“We’re finally getting our break, thank goodness,” she said.
