2019 primary election: Only 3 races exist in primary township balloting in Carbon

Voters in the 11 townships of Carbon County are slated to elect supervisors and auditors in the respective municipalities in the 2019 municipal election, with there being few races for nominations to be won in the primary election that will be held on Tuesday.

There are only three contested contests — two on the Republican ballots and one on a Democratic ballot — to be decided in the first round of voting.

The GOP races exist in Franklin Township, where two candidates are running against each other for the party’s nomination to advance to the race for a six-year term on the board of supervisors, and in Kidder Township, where two candidates are facing each other for the nomination for a four-year term on that board of supervisors.

The Democratic contest is in Lower Towamensing Township, featuring two people seeking the party’s nomination for the six-year term on the board of supervisors.

Here’s what voters in the Carbon County townships will see on their municipal ballots in May:

Banks Township

Democrat William J. Nice and Republican Richard P. Hornick Sr. are running for the six-year term on the board of supervisors. They are unopposed in the primary and will face each other in November.

Democrat Mary Beth Pelley is the lone candidate for the six-year term on the board of auditors.

East Penn Township

The voters in East Penn are scheduled to elect two supervisors, one for a six-year term and one for a four-year term, as well as three auditors for terms of two-, four- and six-years.

There are no primary contests. Democrat Dennis L. Pearson and Republican Gary P. Kuehner are seeking the six-year term and will face each other in November.

No one is running for the four-year term as supervisor, nor are there any candidates in the township for any of the three auditor positions.

Franklin Township

The supervisors’ nomination race in Franklin is between Republicans Aldo Boni and Robin D. Cressley. The winner of that faceoff will meet Democrat Jody Neifert, who is unopposed in his party.

There are no candidates for the six-year term as auditor.

Kidder Township

In Kidder, two supervisors are to be elected this year, one for a six-year term and one for a four-year stint. The voters are also slated to elect a person to serve on the board of auditors for six years.

In the race for the four-year term as supervisor, there is a contest for the Republican nomination between Stephen D. Lilick and Thomas “Bing” LaFond. The latter is also running for the six-year term and is unopposed.

There are no Democratic candidates in the township.

Lausanne Township

Democrat Edward Klynowsky is the lone candidate on the Lausanne Township ballot. He is running for the six-year term available on the board of supervisors.

A six-year term as auditor is also slated to be filled by the electorate.

Lehigh Township

Like Lausanne, Lehigh has only one candidate on its municipal ballot. He is Wayne Wagner, a Republican running unopposed for the six-year term on the board of supervisors.

The Lehigh voters are also set to elect two auditors, for six- and two-year terms.

Lower Towamensing Township

In the other contested race among township voters, Lower Towamensing Township Democrats will have a choice for the six-year term as supervisor. That race is between Connie D. Brown and Ronald A. Walbert. There is no GOP candidate.

There are also no candidates for the six-year term as auditor in the township.

Mahoning Township

There is only one candidate on the Mahoning Township municipal ballot. He is Robert Slaw, a Republican running for the six-year term on the board of supervisors.

The township voters are also slated to elect an auditor for a six-year term.

Packer Township

There are no contested races in Packer Township in the primary election, but there will be one in the general election.

Democrat Paul W. Bray and Republican Robert B. Selert are running for the six-year term on the board of supervisors. They are unopposed this time around and will face each other in November.

Republican Terry Davis is running for the four-year term on the supervisors’ board and is unopposed within his party. There is no Democratic candidate.

There are no candidates for the two-year term on the board of supervisors nor the six-year term on the board of auditors in Packer.

Penn Forest Township

Two Democrats and two Republicans are running unopposed in their parties’ races for two six-year terms available on the Penn Forest Township Board of Supervisors.

The Democrats are Sherry Knappenberger and Roger L. Meckes, who will face Republicans Christian Bartulovich and Scott Lignore in November.

The township voters are also slated to elect two auditors, for two- and six-year terms, although there are no candidates for the positions.

Towamensing Township

The Democrats are the only candidates who appear on the Towamensing Township municipal ballot and both are unopposed.

Michael S. George is running for a six-year term on the board of supervisors and William Acierno is seeking the four-year term on the same board. There are no Republican candidates in the township.
