Weatherly Borough Council is encouraging its residents to recycle their cans.

Soda cans, soup cans and any other types of metal cans all can be recycled in the borough’s new initiative, Mayor Tom Connors said.

Council asks that residents wash out the cans before dropping them off in a designated bin next to the American Legion property.

This initiative does not replace any recycling program that the borough may eventually bring in, but council wanted to start this as a way to raise funds for various groups.

“We are working hard to return to the type of program we had and all want,” Connors said. “Unfortunately, right now we can find no one to take plastic, cardboard, newspaper or glass.”

The metal recycling will generate income to be donated to the borough’s nonprofits, Connors said. The check from the first load of cans will go to the Weatherly Area Community Ambulance Service.

The last Saturday of each month all metal will be accepted.
