WHITEHALL – With nothing to lose, Chris Fredericks figured he might as well let one fly.

The Palmerton senior had already secured his second Colonial League javelin title. But Fredericks wanted more than that.

As Fredericks uncorked one final throw, he knew it was going to be a good one.

“I got a little amped up, and just let everything build into that one,” Fredericks said with a smile.

The end result was a Colonial League record throw of 205-1, surpassing the previous mark of 203-8, set by Nazareth’s Tom Nickles in 1977.

“I wanted the league record today, so it was an awesome feeling for me,” said Fredericks. “And last throw, I didn’t need to throw that, but I wanted it, and I got it. It’s an awesome feeling.”

Locked into first-place with a 191-1, Fredericks went over 200 feet for the second week in a row, after hitting 206-3 last week.

“That was a huge confidence booster for me last week,” said Fredericks. “I was so pumped when I got that, and I was just so confident that my form was there and I was going to keep it going.”

Fredericks won league gold as a sophomore, and placed second last year with a throw of 178-5.

“Last year, I was in a drought coming into the postseason, and I started building back up,” Fredericks said. “Now, I built myself up right before the postseason and now I’m just riding the wave. This is the best I’ve ever felt throwing.”

So much so, he wants to do it again next week.

“It’s huge being able to come back to the same place two weeks in a row, on the same runway,” said Fredericks. “I know my marks, I know the area a little bit better. I have everything setup already, it’s a huge boost for my mindset.

“I wanted this one back, I needed it back. Just to get the meet record on top of it, it’s an awesome feeling; it’s a bonus. “

Fredericks’ record-setting performance highlighted a solid first day of the Colonial League/Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.

Northern Lehigh crowned a pair of champions, with Reagan Pender winning the 3200 and Zach Moyer claiming the top spot in the high jump.

Northwestern’s team of Madeline Consuelos, Allie Costa, Sarah Supplee and Alyssa Zack also won the Colonial League girls 3200 relay with time of 9:42.55. The team was the top seed with a time of 9:45.47.

Pender and Moyer made big improvements from last year’s meet, where Pender was sixth and Moyer fifth.

Seeded first at 11:23.16, Pender won with a time of 11:36.21.

Pender led throughout, pulling away in the second half to win by a wide margin.

“It was definitely what I wanted,” said Pender. “My time wasn’t exactly what I wanted it to be, but I had Grace (Medei, Notre Dame Green Pond, who was second with a time of 11:54.19) behind me pushing me, and it really helped me go.”

Pender knows the competition will only get tougher at next week’s district meet, something she is looking forward to. North Schuylkill’s Cori McCormick won the Schuylkill League 3200 Tuesday with a time of 11:23.91.

“My times have been pretty consistent,” she said. “I think I’m headed in the right direction, at least. I’ll have Cori McCormick (of North Schuylkill) pulling me along next week, and I’m excited for that.

Moyer cleared 6-3 to capture the high jump.

“I was struggling a little bit early, but cleared my head and got things going,” said Moyer. “Last year, I missed the podium, so this year I wanted to get back on the podium.”

After placing fifth a year ago, Moyer returned as the top seed having already cleared 6-6, which tied the school record, earlier this season.

“There are so many good jumpers in this league, you never know who’s going to have a good day, and who’s not, so you always have to come prepared and see if you can do better,” said Moyer. “I’m happy with that, just because it’s state qualifying height. If I can get that next week at districts, I’ll be good to go.”

The Tigers powered to a big personal best in the 3200 relay, easily outpacing runner-up Saucon Valley (9:58.75).

“I definitely think it’s a confidence booster, seeing as we are so far ahead of the league,” said Consuelos. “But it’s also intimidating to watch the EPC because they’re so good, and we never run against them, so we don’t know what that competition feels like.”

Northwestern was in second after the first leg, but Aliie Costa retook the lead on the first lap of the second leg, and quickly pulled away.

“We definitely do. We just really focus on us, and making personal bests,” said Costa.

Sarah Supplee’s third leg helped secure a big lead of nearly 100 meters before Alyssa Zack took over and closed out the race.

“We were seeded a lot faster than the second place team,” said Zack. “So going into it, we were hoping for a first place. So I think definitely today, we were looking at time. We PR’d today, and that’s what we wanted to do.”

The Tigers won the event as the top seed last season with a time of 9:52.94.

“I think it’s awesome, because we worked so hard, coming off a good cross country season, and just to see us all come back, and work really hard in the offseason and during track season has been awesome,” said Supplee.

TWO-IN-ONE ... The Colonial League and Eastern Pennsylvania Conference shared the Whitehall High School track complex for their respective championships.

MEDALS ... Palmerton’s Matt Lalik (121-9) and Josh Mooney (118-9) were second and third, respectively, in the discus.

Madison Martinez (49.82) placed third in the 300 hurdles for the Bombers, while Supplee (50.18) finished fourth.

MOVING ON … The following area athletes advanced to today’s Colonial League finals: Palmerton’s Aaron Stasko (11.31, 100; 23.14, 200); Northern Lehigh’s Kristen Guelcher (13.04, girls 100); Northwestern’s Allyson Hinks (17.86, 100 hurdles) and Emma Fogal (18.01, 100 hurdles); Palmerton’s Jordan Nelson (15.66, 110 hurdles) and Jonathan Perloni (16.95, 110 hurdles). The following athletes advanced to the EPC finals: Armani Dunkley (26.11, 200) and Xavier Garmony (16.03, 110 hurdles).

THAT’S IT! … The event was called at 7:33 p.m. with lightning in the area. The EPC boys 3200 did not start and will now be run Thursday at 4 p.m. at Whitehall. The EPC boys pole vault had started prior to the meet being stopped.
