Hunger Walk goes on in rain

No sunshine, no problem.

Rain and puddles weren’t enough to stop the sixth annual Tamaqua Hunger Walk on Sunday afternoon.

More than 40 people started a milelong journey at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center and trekked through the pouring rain up and down Broad Street to support Tamaqua’s three food banks; the Salvation Army, American Primitive Church and Trinity United Church of Christ.

The weather might have been bleak, but there was sure a bunch of positive energy moving around town.

“It’s good to see the turnout that we had,” said longtime Tamaqua resident Charlotte Welsh. “Unfortunately, weather doesn’t always cooperate, but the cause goes on.”

Tamaqua Fire Police monitored the walk and controlled traffic at each intersection of the route to ensure the safety of the participants.

“The volunteers that come out are really great,” said Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace. “The fact that we have something like this in our community where we can make sure that the food pantries, and everyone coming together for a good cause, you can’t ask for much more than that.”

The walk culminated back at the arts center where everyone dried off and shared some tasty treats.

“The great part is you still see a great turnout,” Gerace said. “Even though you see people out there walking in the rain, they don’t mind a bit. It’s great to come back here and have some ice cream together.”

Next on tap for the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network is the fourth annual Empty Bowl Dinner on May 15. Tickets are available from TAFFN members, at the arts center and at the Tamaqua Chamber office.
