Protect yourself and family from Lyme disease

Sierra Club will present a talk about how to protect yourself and your family from Lyme disease at the Charles A. Brown Ice House, 56 River St., Sand Island, Bethlehem, at 7 p.m. April 23. The speaker will be Cathy Gumlock of Lehigh Valley Lyme disease Support Group.

For the past eight years there have been more cases of Lyme disease in Pennsylvania than in any other state. Residents in Northampton and Lehigh counties are at risk for tick bites even if they only walk to their mailboxes or mow their lawns.

Learn how to effectively reduce the risk by learning about ticks and their habits, and how to protect yourself, your children, your pets and your property. This talk will include information about effective tick repellants and insecticides and how to safely remove an attached tick.

Information will also be provided about possible signs of early tick infection. Written materials will also be provided to participants as well as advice to those who already have Lyme disease.

Gumlock’s talk is based on materials developed through the state Department of Health by the Pennsylvania Lyme Resource Network, a patient support and advocacy group.

Admission is free.
