Chase ends in crash, drug arrest

A chase along Interstate 80 on Tuesday ended in a crash and a Brooklyn, New York, resident arrested on multiple charges.

State police at Fern Ridge said the incident began at 1:56 p.m. on I-80 in Jackson Township, Monroe County, when troopers attempted to stop a 2019 Nissan Altima for several motor vehicle code violations. The driver refused to stop despite emergency lights and siren of the pursuing state police vehicle. Speeds reached 100 miles-per-hour as the driver passed numerous vehicles on both shoulders of the road.

The driver then attempted to cross over the median, crashing into a vehicle. The driver continued to flee westbound and exited at Exit 299, onto Route 715. The driver then turned into The Crossings parking lot, exited the vehicle and ran off. The vehicle, left in the drive position, crashed into a lamp post in the parking lot. The vehicle was later determined to be an Enterprise rental.

After a brief foot chase, the driver was taken into custody. He was identified as Jerry Matos, 35. A custodial search of Matos yielded a large amount of U.S. currency and several oxycodone pills. As a result, Matos was charged with fleeing and eluding police, flight to avoid apprehension, possession of a controlled substance, multiple counts of recklessly endangering another person, accidents involving damage to attended vehicles and numerous other traffic offenses.

Matos was lodged in the county prison at Snydersville pending arraignment.

Assisting Fern Ridge troopers were officers from the Stroudsburg barracks and Pocono Township police.
