Weatherly man charged with choking woman inside their home

A Weatherly man has been charged with allegedly choking a woman in their home.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Shawn Leadbetter of the Palmerton Borough Police Department:

At 7:57 p.m. Wednesday, Leadbetter was dispatched to the 200 block of Columbia Avenue for a physical domestic in progress.

Upon arrival, it was determined that the male identified as Chad Muniz, 42, of the 300 block of N. Lehigh Gorge Road, fled on foot as Sgt. Christopher Ritter and Leadbetter spoke with the victim.

Leadbetter found the victim to have a laceration on her upper lip along with ligature marks and a swollen throat consistent with being choked.

The victim also had swollen and bruised glands underneath her eyes and on her cheeks.

The victim provided a written and verbal statement advising that she and Muniz were in a verbal argument in the basement of their home when Muniz placed her in a headlock and raked his fingers over her face.

The fight continued where the victim told Muniz he had to leave for the night, at which time Muniz said, “I’ll show you what choking is” as he then forcibly grabbed her by the front of her neck, causing her to have trouble breathing.

Leadbetter later observed Muniz on foot, at which time he was taken into custody.

The victim was later admitted to St. Luke’s Palmerton Campus Emergency Room for treatment.

Muniz was read his Miranda warnings by Leadbetter, and he invoked his right to counsel.

Muniz faces charges of strangulation; simple assault — attempt; simple assault — attempt by menace; and harassment by physical contact.

He is currently free in lieu of $25,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing April 10 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
