Local roundup: Results from March 29

The Northwestern and Palmerton baseball and softball teams picked up victories on Friday.

Panther Valley’s baseball and Tamaqua’s softball teams also earned wins.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Carter Welch went the distance on the mound and also added two hits at the plate to lead Northwestern to a 6-5 Colonial League win over Southern Lehigh.

The Tigers (2-1) received two hits from Rafe Perich, Nick Henry, and Colten Hagadus. Henry scored a pair of runs, while Hagadus knocked in two runs. Vinnie Castrine also scored two runs for the winners, who took the lead for good with a four-run third inning.

Colin Houck had three RBIs for the Spartans (1-2), while Dalton Musselman added two hits and two runs.

Salem Christian-Panther Vy.

Panther Valley needed just three innings to breeze to a 15-0 non-league victory over Salem Christian.

The Panthers’ (2-1) Aaron Miller had a huge performance in the mercy-rule win, picking up a grand slam home run, a single, a run scored, and five RBIs. Also contributing for Panther Valley were Jake Taras (two hits, one RBI); Chuck Byers (triple, three runs scored); Brad Buzzard (triple, one run scored); Wyatt Zimmerman (double, two RBIs, one run scored); Mason Goida (single, two runs scored, one RBI); Louis Clouser (two runs scored); Gavin Garcia (two runs scored); and Mark Kokinda (one hit, one run scored, one RBI).

Kokinda got the pitching win, striking out eight and allowing just two hits.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Tyler Roe tossed a gem and Palmerton blanked Catasauqua 2-0 in Colonial League action.

Roe finished with 11 strikeouts - allowing just two walks and two hits - in seven innings of work for the Bombers (1-2). Ben Serfass (2-for-3) and Devyn Rehrig (double) had RBIs in the second inning, and Roe made them stick.

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury

A big fourth inning propelled Salisbury to a 6-3 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Colin Weiss went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Falcons (2-1), who exploded for five runs in the fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit. Quinn Warmkessel added two hits and earned the win on the mound.

Luke Eitner and Brandon Hess had two hits apiece and knocked in a run for the Bulldogs (1-2).

SOFTBALL

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Morgan Farthing and Emily Akelaitis both had big games at the plate to help lead Northwestern to a 12-1 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Farthing had three hits, including a home run, scored three runs and knocked in two. Akelaitis also finished with three hits, three runs and two RBIs.

Akelaitis gained the pitching win, striking out six and allowing just three hits and one walk.

The Tigers (2-1) received two hits and two runs from Molly Mitman, while Olivia Stofflett added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Tamaqua-Tri Valley

Tamaqua rolled to an 11-1 victory over Tri Valley.

Jada Schellhammer starred at the plate and in the circle for the Raiders (2-1). The senior went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored, while also striking out 10 and allowing just two hits in six innings of work.

Miranda Chinchar, Jane Kupchinsky, Jen Frederickson and Bryn Miller all had two hits apiece for Tamaqua, while Alexsya Thomas added a homer and two RBIs.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Palmerton scored 10 runs in the third inning en route to a 15-0 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Paige Shupp had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Blue Bombers (3-0) on offense. Tori Sterling collected two hits and knocked in a pair of runs, while Emily Recker had a hit and two RBIs.

The winners also received two runs scored from both McKenzie Silliman and Breanna Hartranft.

Shupp tossed three hitless innings for the pitching win. She walked one and struck out six.

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury

Julia Graver’s groundout in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Salisbury a 4-3 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Emily Silberman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a home run and a run scored for the Falcons (2-1). Silberman struck out nine in seven innings of work in the circle.

Brianna Schuck had a double and RBI for the Bulldogs (0-3), who tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Pleasant Vy.-PM East

Pleasant Valley doubled Pocono Mountain East in hits, but the Cardinals gained a 5-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory on Thursday.

Meara Hanyon had two hits, one a triple, and scored PV’s only run. Tyler Woltal also collected a pair of hits and knocked in the team’s run.

BOYS LACROSSE

Moravian Aca.-Pleasant Vy.

Moravian Academy picked up an 18-5 non-league win over Pleasant Valley.

Victor Simone, Riley Langen, Nolan DiSora and Alex Belarmino had three goals apiece for the Lions (1-0). Langen also tallied four assists, while DiSora added three.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-3.
