A look back: March 23, 1996

The latest thrust to restore the historic Tamaqua Railroad Station is underway, as volunteers are undertaking the task of restoring wood windows in the north wing of the station and internal rebuilding.

The recent work to the 1874 vintage brick structure is being subsidized through state grants obtained through the support of Rep. David Argall and Sen. James Rhoades.

The awarding agency for these grants, totaling $25,000, is the Pennsylvania State Historic and Museum Commission, which is also overseeing the work and attention to authenticity to the station.

Kenneth Smulligan is president of the Tamaqua S.O.S. while Daniel Poncavage is the project’s registered architect.
